Majorca has been inhabited for thousands of years and archeaological remains have been discovered from 6000–4000 BC. The island was occupied by the Romans in 123 BC and developed well under the control of the Roman empire. In Roman times the towns of Alcudia and Palma were created. At this time in history Mallorca relied upon olive growing and wine making as its main money maker.

In 425 the Vandals invaded the island and won it over into their kingdom by 460. This rule of the Vandals did not last long because by 534 Majorca was taken over by the Byzantine Empire and at thios point Christianity flourished and many beautiful churches were built. From around the date of 700 the island was continually attacked by Muslim raiders from North Africa. Around 900, the Caliphate of Cordoba won over Majorca, and brought a period of complete prosperity for the island. In more recent times in 1276 James II became king of the new Kingdom of MajorcaIn 1344, King Peter IV of Aragon invaded, and re-incorporated the island into the Crown.
